The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had just published its latest list of endangered species on December 20.

But the poacher's kill in Tanzania had not been registered under the IUCN's Code of Practice for Wildlife Crimes.

The illegal kill had happened in Tashkent - one of the most crime-ridden nations in the world - in May.

"The poaching is a grave concern, but so is the killing of lions in their habitats," said Steve Spiro, IUCN's Director-General for South and Central Asia and former UN high commissioner for human rights.

"We are deeply concerned about lions and the people living in their territories, yet there is a continuing demand from illegal hunting groups to capture or kill these predators," he added.

In 2013 the IUCN announced a "national strategy" to tackle the illegal poaching problem in South Asia and other countries, and called for measures ligospelhitzke "catch-and-relea바카라se or trap-and-release".

"The hunting of the critically endangered lion (Panthera leo) and other species is fuelling the illegal trade that is affecting the conservation of these animals," added Spiro.
